Google Messages new update makes it look a bit like the iPhone's Messages app

To commemorate one billion monthly active users, Google is introducing several new customization options on its Messages app. What’s particularly interesting about the update is that a few of the features are reminiscent of what you find on Apple’s own Messages app. For example, you have Photomoji, allowing you to clip specific parts in a photograph and use them as emoji reactions. iOS 17 has something similar called Stickers . In Google Messages, cutouts are “saved in a special tab for reuse”, plus other people in a group chat can use the same Photomojis at any time. The similarities don’t stop there. Google Messages is adding Profiles that let users create an introductory biography about themselves alongside their name and a picture. Its iOS counterpart would be Contact Poster . In addition, the app will now have animated Screen Effects akin to the message animations on iPhone. Unlike iOS, you can’t activate the colorful displays whenever you want as Google’s rendition requ...

Google wants you to bring the laughts with its new .meme domain

Memes, the internet's favourite way to spread culture and ideas, have a new home onlinethanks to the launch of Google's new top-level .meme domain.  Google Registry recently announced that the new .meme domain will be publicly available from December 5 at a base annual price.  Early adopters can secure a .meme domain before then as part of Google’s Early Access Period (EAP), but this will require an “additional one-time fee” that will decrease on a daily basis until the domain is publicly launched.  Early adopters meme business As part of the announcement, Google highlighted six early adopters of the .meme domain. Partners include meme trend website Know Your Meme , premier meme clearinghouse License.Meme and (perhaps unsurprisingly) a host of cat meme sites including Grumpy Cat , Nyan Cat , and CAT.MEME . "Memes are the embodiment of internet culture, having captured the eyeballs, hearts and minds of millions of people," Christina Yeh from Google's Registr...

Docker Hub could be containing thousands of valuable secrets, and they're all in plain view

There are “thousands” of secrets exposed on Docker Hub, ranging from harmless API keys to potentially harmful information. This is according to researchers from the Cybernews Research team , who recently analyzed 10,178 Docker Hub images. In those, they found almost 5,500 container images (54%) holding secrets that could be deemed sensitive information. From those 5,500 container images, the researchers pulled exactly 191,529 secrets. Many were duplicates which, when removed, left the researchers with exactly 48,481 unique secrets.  Reader Offer: $50 Amazon gift card with demo Perimeter 81's Malware Protection intercepts threats at the delivery stage to prevent known malware, polymorphic attacks, zero-day exploits, and more. Malicious links are dominating emails all over the world

Malicious web links are dominating emails all over the world, being used to deliver harmful malware in order to wreak havoc or extort money. A new research paper by cybersecurity experts Hornetsecurity found that besides malicious web links, hackers are still super interested in phishing. With an increase of almost 4% year-on-year (39.6% - 43.3%), it is still the most common email attack technique.  Hackers are also constantly evolving their tactics by changing email formats and attachments to best sneak around spam filters. Google Workspace apparently has an obvious flaw that could lead to cyberattacks

Cybersecurity researchers from Hunters said they discovered a “severe design flaw” in a powerful Google Workspace feature. Google, however, downplayed the findings, saying there are no underlying issues and that it’s just a matter of each company protecting its endpoints with the tools at its disposal. As reported by The Hacker News , researchers discovered a flaw in the domain-wide delegation (DWD) feature, which hackers can allegedly exploit to escalate privileges and gain access to Workspace APIs without super admin privileges.  Reader Offer: $50 Amazon gift card with demo Perimeter 81's Malware Protection intercepts threats at the delivery stage to prevent known malware, polymorphic attacks, zero-day exploits, and more. This Stardew Valley-like farming sim plays at the bottom of your screen so you work and play at the same time

Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing are among some of the best choices out there if you're looking for a game to get swept up in for hours at a time. But, if you're a fan of management sims and a multitasker as well, this upcoming farming sim will likely pique your interest.  Developed by Mister Morris Games, Rusty's Retirement is an idle-farming simulation game that runs at the bottom of your gaming monitor, allowing you to focus on other tasks like working while you tend to your crops. Set to release in Q1 2024 on Steam , the idle sim puts you in the shoes of a wholesome robot as you grow crops and use them to produce clean and energy-efficient biofuel. Having gathered this "vital robot power source," you'll then need to sell your harvest to the other machine inhabitants of your settlement. This, in turn, will let you reinvest the money into expanding your farm. If you're a terrible procrastinator (like me) this might not sound like your cup of tea...

Five Nights at Freddy’s wild success might mean more movies hit streaming and theaters the same day

Five Nights At Freddy's , the film of the popular gaming franchise, could have an impact beyond giving audiences some good scares. The film was released to streaming on Peacock at the same time as it premiered in movie theaters, and that doesn't appear to have damaged its box office at all: according to Blumhouse boss Jason Blum, who posted on X, " FNAF is the BIGGEST Blumhouse film of ALL-TIME". It's also Peacock's biggest ever launch . Not bad for a movie with a reportedly titchy $20m budget. Variety says it shattered multiple box office records on its opening weekend, making "a killing in its box office debut with $80 million in North America and $132 million globally." According to Boxoffice Pro chief analyst Shawn Robbins, "every studio should be taking note." Maybe we don't have to choose between movies coming to streaming only, or being exclusively at theaters for months. Maybe. Can other genres learn lessons from FNAF? I...
