MWC 2023: foldable phones, chatbots, 6G and everything to expect

Mobile World Congress (MWC) is back, promising a slew of big launches across the phones space including new handsets, new technologies and more.   It's the biggest mobile tech show of the year, when major players from all across the industry get together to show off products, make deals, and check out some of the innovations that will be making their way to consumer devices over the next 12 months. In recent years, we've seen fewer smartphone launches at MWC – these now tend to be at separate events, including Samsung Unpacked – but there will still be a lot of news and announcements coming out of the event across several days. We'll be on the ground at MWC as always, and will be bringing you all the big news as it happens. Ahead of the official start of the event, here are the most exciting launches to look out for. When is MWC 2023? MWC 2023 runs from Monday, February 27 to Thursday, March 2 – though expect most of the big announcements to happen towards the start ...

The first zettaflop systems will need nuclear power, AMD CEO claims

The CEO of chip giant AMD has said that the high-performance computing (HPC) industry needs to start becoming significantly more efficient, or it will need to turn to nuclear energy. AMD CPU and GPU performance typically double every 2.4 years which is good progress by any means, but power efficiency has not seen such considerable improvements.  Speaking at International Solid-State Circuits Conference, Dr Lisa Su noted that with zettaflop HPCs on the horizon, we should turn our attention to performance per unit of energy in order to make zettaflop computation a reality. Going nuclear According to current trends and assuming that progress doesn’t slow down, AMD reckons that zettaflop computation could be here in about a decade (although Intel reckons it could be here in about half that time). The reality is that when they arrive isn’t as important as when they will become available on a usable, energy-efficient scale. Currently, Su generously estimates that an HPC capable of...

ChatGPT showed me just how far it is from writing a blockbuster

10,000 hours. That’s how long, at least according to author Malcolm Gladwell, it’s supposed to take to master a craft. Or, if you’re an AI a matter of months, weeks, or days. When I read that ChatGPT is now such an adept writer it’s already authored hundreds of books on Amazon’s self-publishing service, I experienced a mini freakout. To be clear, OpenAI’s groundbreaking chatbot is not publishing these tomes on its own. People are working with ChatGPT to develop themes, stories, and chapters for their books. My immediate reaction was, “I’m doomed.” But as the icy chill of that cold reality receded, I considered something else. Anyone can write and publish a book, and most of them won’t be very good. Why should we assume that ChatGPT, which is learning from a lot of online writing, can write at, say, Stephen King's level – or even my level? In addition to writing for technology publications for over 30 years, I've dabbled in fiction – mostly children’s books I’ve written, ...

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D beats out Core i9-13900K in leaked reviewer's guide

The performance race continues, as a newly leaked AMD review guide revealed that the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D is between 5-6% faster than the Intel Core i9-13900K. The confidential data, which was leaked by HDTecnologia and reported on by VideoCardz , shows how well the Ryzen 9 7950X3D flagship Zen4 model equipped with extended L3 cache performs against the Intel 13th-gen processor. According to said data, the 7950X3D is 5.6% faster in gaming based on games like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Borderlands 3, Cyperpunk 2077, Dirt 5, and more played at 1080p resolution. AMD tested the Ryzen 9 7950X3D using two graphics cards, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the Nvidia RTX 4090, with both systems featuring two 16GB DDR5-6000 memory. When using the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, the gap between the two processors is 5.6%. That gap increases to 6% when using the Nvidia RTX 4090. The new AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D model was also compared to the original model, the 7950X, without the extra cache, and testing found that...
