New ChromeOS update for Chromebooks makes it feel more like Android

Google is officially rolling out ChromeOS 117 to a Chromebook near you. With this update, the tech giant is blurring the lines between Chromebooks and Androids as the former now adopts a Material You redesign. The system isn’t getting a total rework as the patch only affects certain areas like the Quick Settings menu. On there, you’ll see items are now encased in large rounded rectangles instead of circles. There are buttons for activating Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cast Screen among other things. Google states in its announcement post that it strived to have “less pagination” by putting everything into one compact space.  What you see in the new Quick Settings depends on the type of Chromebook you own plus what software is installed. For example, on 9To5Google’s report , there’s an entry for a VPN. On our Chromebook Spin 714 , there was an option for the Accessibility features.  (Image credit: Future) It’s important to note that both the volume and brightness slider...

Quordle today - hints and answers for Friday, September 29 (game #613)

It's time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I'm still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it's fun, but also difficult. What's more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints , you'll probably need some for this game too.  I'm a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who's been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #613 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.  SPOILER WARNING: Information about Quo...

Scientists want to add broadband technology to your brain — but it’s not what you think

Scientists have devised a way to let the human brain communicate with computers using a wireless neural implant, in the latest attempt to move the realm of brain-computer interfaces forward. Published in Nature Electronics , the research team with Pursue University have built a wireless communication technique for brain implants – known as biphasic quasistatic brain communication. This transmits information to a headphone-shaped hub, with the hub sending power and programming bits to the implant through fully electronic signals to avoid transduction loss, according to Nature. This builds on technology that’s seen, for example, BCI systems translate neural signals into sentences at roughly 150 words per minute, according to research published this year . This is close to normal conversational speed. Tapping into the body's built-in broadband Wearable devices that form part of BCI systems normally use electromagnetic fields to communicate information wirelessly – but implants su...

This devious phishing scam makes it look like dodgy emails are actually safe

Hackers are using the dreaded “zero font” tactic in phishing emails , instilling a false sense of legitimacy in otherwise malicious threats, researchers are saying.  Just as the name suggests, zero font is a tactic in which hackers use the size 0 for a font, making certain text invisible to the human eye. At the same time software, and more importantly - antivirus and email protection software - can read it. Threat actors leverage this fact to confuse email security solutions and have otherwise malicious emails end up in the inbox, instead of the spam folder. In this particular instance, however, it’s not just to confuse software, but to confuse the reader, as well. This is according to ISC Sans analyst Jan Kopriva, who’s seen a sample of a malicious email. When a victim receives a message in the Outlook client, there are three ways to read it - the list of emails, usually located to the left, the preview pane, usually seen to the right, and in a separate window, after double-c...

9 things announced at the Meta Connect 2023 event

Meta’s Connect developer conferences have been fairly humble these past couple of years as the company shifted to online events due to the pandemic. But for 2023, the tech giant returned to an in-person event and took some big swings. During the keynote, we received a ton of new information regarding the Meta Quest 3 VR headset , Meta's generative AI projects, and the next generation of Ray-Ban smart glasses . The star of the show was undoubtedly the Quest 3. It features improved hardware running on the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 SoC (system on a chip), an in-depth mapping upgrade , and greater support for video games. The reveal was certainly impressive. However as the conference went on, it felt like the spotlight shifted to all the AI announcements. We’ve known some of the AI models Meta has been developing for a while now, like its revamped chatbot to take on GPT-4 . But as it turns out there was a lot more going on behind the scenes as the company showed off a slew of AI featur...

Plucky CPU maker beats AMD and Intel to become first to offer 320 cores per server — with even bigger models in the pipeline

Oracle has snubbed leading CPUs from the likes of AMD and Intel in favor of AmpereOne processors for use in its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) A2 Instances – offering the highest core count in the industry. Coming in 2024, the new OCI service – which has 320 cores in the bare metal shape and 156 cores in the flexible virtual machine (VM) shape – will be used to power general-purpose cloud workloads. These include running web servers, transcoding video, and servicing CPU-based AI inference workloads. At the same time, Oracle also announced two additional new services including OCI compute bare metal instances, powered by Nvidia H100 GPUs , as well as OCI compute bare metal instances powered by Nvidia L40S GPUs. A major coup for Ampere “Oracle was the first cloud services provider to globally deploy compute instances based on Ampere processors,” said Jeff Wittich, chief product officer at Ampere Computing. “This new generation of Ampere A2-based instances from Oracle Cloud Infra...

Counter-Strike 2 has finally released on PC - players can dive in now

It finally happened - Counter-Strike 2 has officially released on PC after a week of hints and teasers, which have probably left fans wholly unsurprised about this whole thing.  For those out of the loop, the official Counter-Strike Twitter account set the ball rolling last week, on September 20, when it tweeted : “What are you doing next Wednesday?” From this point on, many fans believed that this meant that the sequel’s release date was all but confirmed.  pic.twitter.com/SM57ZVCTmI September 27, 2023 See more As GamesRadar+ points out, was further solidified by the fact that, yesterday (September 26), the account’s Twitter banner was changed to the popular The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask meme, which reads: “Dawn of The Final Day.” Needless to say, it’d be wrong to say that this is a sudden release that no one saw coming.  Counter-Strike 2 was announced back in March, and since then, many players have already been given the chance to dive in thanks to...
