AMD RDNA 3 appears primed for 3D V-cache integration

With the announcement of AMD Ryzen 7000X3D-series chips at CES 2023, a lot of attention has been paid to what the new stackable cache technology can bring to Zen 4 processors. According to a new teardown of the Radeon RX 7900 XT, there is reason to hope that this same technology will be making its way to a graphics card near you. What else can you see? A linear array of "spots" that look remarkably like the keep out zones on X3D, and that are on the same 17-18 um pitch. Could they be considering stacked MCD functionality (or maybe they're something else)? January 27, 2023 See more Tom Wassick, a self-described "semiconductor packaging engineering professional", tore down the new Radeon RX 7900 XT to do a deep dive into its guts using infrared imaging. He says the same kind of 3D V-cache connections used for the AMD Ryzen 5800X3D exist on the Radeon RX 7900 XT's MCD die, though there is a blank piece of silicon where a compute-capable die could go. ...

Yandex caught scraping Google SEO code

As TechRadar Pro reported earlier in January 2023, a former Yandex employee with a “political” motive has allegedly leaked a wide-ranging repository of source code for many of the web portal’s products, potentially shedding light on the dark art of search engine optimization . BleepingComputer reports the employee leaked git sources totalling 44.7GB of files, containing “all of” Yandex’s source code except for its anti-spam rules, that were obtained in July 2022. The raw source code won’t be of interest to everyone, Search Engine Land 's report that 17,854 search ranking factors have been uncovered as part of the leak should be of interest to any person, business or publication looking to see their pages ranked highly in search engines. Yandex leak SEO insights A partial list of factors ranked by the Yandex search engine from one file in the codebase, shared by CEO of SEO consultancy MOG Media Martin MacDonald, does shed some light on the aspects of copy that Yandex applie...

James Gunn's DCU movie lineup will be revealed today – here's what to expect

It's almost time to find out more about the new DC Cinematic Universe (DCU). Three months after James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed co-heads of DC Studios , the duo are set to reveal their 10-year plan for Warner Bros' rebooted DC Extended Universe (DCEU) later today (January 30). And, frankly, they're cutting it fine. Gunn has consistently stated that he'd share the first official details about the DCU's new blueprint before January 2023 ends – so with one day left before February rolls around, the pair are certainly pushing it. Finally, though, DC fans will learn more about Gunn and Safran's DCU masterplan. Yesterday, select members of the press were invited to a private presentation concerning the DCU's revival. Per industry insider Grace Randolph , those plans will reportedly be made public at 9am PT / 2pm ET / 5pm GMT on Tuesday, January 31 (that's 3am AEST on Wednesday, February 1 for Australian readers). So, what can we expect to hear ...

Windows 11 updates are still failing to install with mysterious error messages

Windows 11’s latest updates have been hit by yet another bug that causes the installation process to fail while producing a mysterious and unhelpful error message. This problem has been plaguing Windows 11 users for some time now, and as Windows Latest reports, it’s continuing to frustrate some folks who can’t install the January update from Microsoft (known as patch KB5022303), and the recent optional update for January released last week (KB5022360 – a preview update which will be fully honed and released in February). Those encountering the glitch will simply be told that the installation has failed with an error code, the most commonly witnessed one being ‘0x800f0831’, but other mysterious strings of hexadecimal code which mean precisely nothing to the average user can also pop up. Like good old ‘0x800f0988’ for example. As highlighted by Windows Latest, a typical report from a user (on Microsoft’s Feedback Hub) runs like this: “My HP laptop has been unable to successfully in...

This brutal new malware could absolutely destroy your Windows PC

A new cyberattack that appears to be targeted at Ukraine and is designed to overwrite crucial Windows files has been spotted by security firm ESET. “On January 25th #ESETResearch discovered a new cyberattack in Ukraine. Attackers deployed a new wiper we named #SwiftSlicer using Active Directory Group Policy. The #SwiftSlicer wiper is written in Go programing language. We attribute this attack to #Sandworm," a Tweet by the firm read. Also known as Unit 74455, Sandworm is allegedly a group of Russian cybermilitary hackers working for the General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). The group is also credited with a number of other attacks in Ukraine, including a 2015 attack on the power grid, though these claims are currently unsubstantiated. Sandworm SwiftSlicer cyberattack “Once executed it deletes shadow copies, recursively overwrites files located in %CSIDL_SYSTEM%\drivers, %CSIDL_SYSTEM_DRIVE%\Windows\NTDS and other non-system drives and then reboots computer,"...

LG's new OLED TVs will get an audio upgrade to please home theater lovers

LG has announced that its new 2023 TVs will offer native support for DTS audio codecs for the first time, including the Dolby Atmos rival DTS:X. Xperi, the company behind DTS:X, revealed in a press release that LG’s latest OLED and premium LCD TVs would incorporate its audio codec. Later, LG Korea reportedly confirmed to FlatPanelsHD that all of its 2023 OLED TVs (including the LG C3 and LG G3 ) and the “QNED85 and up” will be able to decode the DTS, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced audio codecs. However, LG added that its TV speakers won’t be able to play back DTS:X enhanced audio, instead, they’ll just be able to send the data to an external sound system that can. Xperi’s DTS and DTS:X codecs are used by many Blu-ray discs and the IMAX-enhanced Marvel films on Disney Plus , so by supporting this codec LG’s 2023 OLED TVs just got a nice upgrade to their audio over their predecessors (and many rivals) if you have a library of discs (as many hardcore home theater fans do). Sure, you need ...

Samsung Galaxy S23 prices could mean bad news in some countries

The official launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S23 smartphones is just around the corner, and while the devices’ respective specs have been all-but confirmed by leaks, the lineup’s pricing structure remains the subject of much speculation.  We recently reported on leaked Verizon documents suggesting that the Samsung Galaxy S23 , Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra will cost the same as their Samsung Galaxy S22 counterparts in the US (i.e. $799.99, $999.99 and $1,199.99). The bad news is that it appears Samsung won't be applying the same philosophy across the globe.  Documents hinting at lofty Galaxy S23 prices in both South Korea and Australia circulated across the web some weeks ago, but a new report from reliable tipster Roland Quandt indicates that customers in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium will be also faced with eye-watering Galaxy S23 prices. According to Quandt, Galaxy S23 prices will be increasing by as much as €300 (equivalent to around $325 / £260) o...

This malware hides on USB drives, waiting to strike Windows machines

Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 team has uncovered a series of tools and malware samples in a recent Black Basta breach, with one particularly nasty train gaining particular attention. The campaign uses years-old PlugX malware to infect removable USB drives , which can go on to affect any Windows host they are connected to. Apparently existing for more than a decade, the campaign was initially credited to Chinese hacker groups however it has supported an “evolving set of capabilities throughout the years”, rendering it very difficult to attribute threats to any given group or individual. PlugX USB malware In this latest iteration, researchers found that it can go almost undetected even on the latest version of Windows, to the point where malicious files “can only be viewed on a Unix-like OS or by mounting the USB device in a forensic tool.” It hides files by using a certain Unicode character, stopping Windows Explorer and the command shell from showing users the USB directory struct...

You can now join a Microsoft Teams call from your car... but you probably shouldn't

One of the last safe places for avoiding video calls could soon fall, no thanks to a new update for Microsoft Teams . The video conferencing service is working on an update that will allow users to join a Teams call directly from their vehicle while driving using Apple's CarPlay platform. Apple has recently updated CarPlay to include a new calendar view, which will now allow users to join a Microsoft Teams call using their iPhone while driving. Microsoft Teams CarPlay The official entry in the Microsoft 365 roadmap for the update doesn't provide any extra detail on exactly how the feature will work, simply noting that users can choose to join a Teams meeting using the new CarPlay calendar view. Obviously, due care and attention should be paid to the road whilst driving, so hopefully the calls taking place can be audio-only as well, meaning users can keep their eyes on the road. The feature is still marked as in development for the time being, with a scheduled general ...

These dodgy Android apps have seen over 20 million downloads

The Google Play Store has been home to a growing number of suspicious activities in recent months, new research has found. A study by Dr.Web found a large number of fake apps and trojans designed to subscribe victims to paid services, as well as an alarming rate of spyware. The report details the increasing number of apps that have been added to the company’s antivirus database, illustrating the caution that Android users should take when browsing the Play Store. Android apps with rewards Among the most significant types of dodgy Android apps in recent months is a rewards-based setup. Dr.Web says that users are incentivized to complete various tasks, like installing, launching, and using other programs and games to receive a ‘virtual reward’. These tokens can then supposedly be cashed in for real money or credit.  To be able to access rewards of true monetary value, users have been needing to collect “millions” of rewards, and that’s before spending a lot of time, effort, a...

DualSense Edge: everything you need to know about the PS5 pro controller

The DualSense Edge is the debut of Sony’s ‘Pro’ controller, which is a potentially exciting prospect for PS5 players. But there's a lot to answer in terms of what separates it from the standard DualSense Wireless Controller, and whether or not it has been worth the anticipation in the lead up to it's release.   Compared to the regular DualSense wireless controller , the DualSense Edge offers upgraded features. The DualSense has been highly praised for its bespoke features with the PS5 , including its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The Edge has some big shoes to fill alongside it's bigger price tag to justify. The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 are both impeccably designed for the Xbox Series X and Series S, so having an advanced controller for the PS5 is long overdue. But if you’re looking for alternative ways to enhance your gaming experience, it’s worth checking out the best accessories for PS5 , too. DualSens...

The Last of Us showrunners explain that major episode 3 story shift

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us HBO’s The Last of Us has earned rave reviews for its impressive loyalty to developer Naughty Dog’s era-defining PlayStation title, but the series’ third episode marked the first major deviation from Joel and Ellie’s in-game story.  ‘Long Long Time’ puts the spotlight on Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett), two lonely survivors who come together in the aftermath of the global Cordyceps outbreak. Both characters feature briefly in the original The Last of Us game , but HBO’s small screen adaptation dedicates an entire hour to delving deeper into their decades-long relationship. In an interview with TechRadar ahead of the series' release, co-showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin explained the thinking behind their decision to go off-piste with The Last of Us episode 3 – which the pair have previously admitted will inevitably leave some fans “upset”.  “It came out of an interest I had in portraying...

The iPhone 15 Wi-Fi 6E upgrade might just be for the Pro models

When the iPhone 15 handsets make an appearance, we're once again expecting there to be several differences between the standard two phones and the two more expensive Pro models – and one of those differences could be in Wi-Fi support. A leaked document posted by tipster Unknownz21 on Twitter (via MacRumors ) makes reference to the antenna architecture for the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to the document, the standard iPhone 15 and the Plus model will stick with the same Wi-Fi 6 spec as the current iPhone 14 series. The Pro and the Pro Max, however, will be upgraded to the latest Wi-Fi 6E standard. A numbers game We had heard rumblings earlier in the week that Wi-Fi 6E would be coming to the iPhone 15 series in 2023, but at that stage we were thinking the upgrade was intended for all the models. Now that doesn't appear to be the case. The difference between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E isn't huge though: it supports...

Another flurry of Samsung Galaxy S23 price leaks have turned up

We've already seen several price leaks for the Samsung Galaxy S23 , but they're not stopping ahead of the expected launch of the phones on February 1. We now have information on pricing in Turkey, Germany and India. Even if you don't live in those countries, these are important markers of how the handsets are going to be priced globally. In Turkey for example (from Roland Quandt via Notebookcheck ), the Galaxy S23 phones are set to cost substantially more than their Galaxy S22 predecessors. The starting price for the least expensive Galaxy S23 model is apparently going to be 50,000 Turkish lira – that works out as about $2,660 / £2,145 / AU$3,740, which is a small fortune. The main reason is high taxes on imported electronic goods. Germany and India Elsewhere in the world, rumored German pricing for the Galaxy S23 phones has appeared on WinFuture (via GSMArena ). At starting prices of €949 (S23), €1,199 (S23 Plus) and €1,399 (S23 Ultra), a jump of around €100 in each...

Leaked Samsung Galaxy S23 spec sheet reveals all the key details

This time next week, the Samsung Galaxy S23 phones will have been officially unveiled, which means we won't have any more leaks around the handsets to report on – such as the full specs sheet that just appeared on the web, for example. Posted by reliable tipster Roland Quandt , the specs sheet covers all three phones – the standard S23, the S23 Plus, and the S23 Ultra – and gives us a rundown of everything from the battery capacities to the camera modules. In other words, don't read any further if you're avoiding spoilers for next week's Samsung Unpacked launch event on February 1. We'll be covering the event live of course, and anyone who wants to will also be able to watch everything live online . #GalaxyS23 #comparison pic.twitter.com/NBONtiP53L January 27, 2023 See more Specs appeal We're looking at the 120Hz screens for the phones this year, with the Galaxy S23 offering a 6.1-inch display, the Galaxy S23 Plus upping that to a 6.6-inch display, ...

Why Apple's overall Privacy focus in iOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2 is a big deal

Privacy and Apple go hand in hand - it has for years now, and its recent video starring Nick Mohammad from Ted Lasso to promote Data Privacy week was inspired. However, with today (January 28) being Data Privacy Day, it's important to look at other features that you can use with your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to help protect your data. All of these are features that I switched on as soon as they've been introduced - with Advanced Data Protection being the latest one for me, as it was recently introduced in iOS 16.3 . With this in mind, there are a few other features, alongside Advanced Data Protection that you should consider switching on, and why you should do it as soon as. Advanced Data Protection (Image credit: TechRadar) Introduced in iOS 16.3, not only does this allow you to protect your iCloud backups with an encrypted password, but your Safari bookmarks, your iCloud Drive contents, Notes and much more. This way, you and you alone can only access this data - ...
