iPhone 15 screen sizes: What we’re expecting

One of the big questions Apple fans have before the launch of each new iPhone range concerns what size the screens will be.  It should be a simple matter - after all, two generations of ‘mini’ handsets aside, numbered iPhones have come in two sizes since 2020: 6.1 inches for the basic model and the standard Pro, and 6.7 inches for the Plus and Pro Maxes. Will that change for the iPhone 15 series? We're still a few months away from the likely release of the new handsets in September, and we certainly don't expect any hints at next week's WWDC 2023 , but we can make an informed guess based on what the rumor mill is already saying. So, here’s everything we know so far about iPhone 15 screen sizes, plus some details about other screen enhancements to look out for, and possible hints around what might happen with the iPhone 16 series. iPhone 15 screens: Rumored sizes When it comes to the iPhone 15 family’s screen sizes, it looks like Apple is sticking to the mantra: “if i...

First-gen Chromecast owners will need to upgrade after Google terminates support

Google has quietly ended support for its first-generation Chromecast dongle, capping off a nearly decade-long run (it missed the mark by a couple of months). If you check out the firmware release notes on the Chromecast Help website , you’ll notice the last update was on April 27. It’s been a while since the company pulled the plug, but no one noticed until very recently. At the bottom of the page, you’ll see a notice stating old Chromecasts will “no longer receive software or security updates” nor will Google provide any sort of “technical support”. Because there won’t be any more patches moving forward,  people “may notice a degradation in performance” over time, although some would argue the dip in quality has been around for a while now. Several comments from users on the Chromecast subreddit, for example, mention how they haven’t used their devices in years due to how slow it became. It is worth pointing out that the last major firmware patch for the original Chromecast wa...

AMD may be embarrassing Nvidia in the mid-range GPU market

It seems that AMD might have a leg up against its long-standing competitor Nvidia in the mid-range graphics card battle, according to the latest reports from the rumor mill. Both AMD and Nvidia released their mid-range offerings, the AMD RX 7600 and the Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti , respectively, around the same time. But according to our own reviews, AMD’s card is a much better value than Nvidia’s, and it seems like sales are reflecting that. Retailer leaks reported by PCGamesN state that despite both manufacturers supplying roughly the same amount of card stock, the 4060 Ti has sold only 1/10 of its stock, while the RX 7600 may have actually sold out in some locations. Some choice quotes from these retailers called the RTX 4060 Ti launch “the worst I’ve seen in memory,” and another “We aren’t actually having any trouble moving 7600 stock. 4060 Ti’s a different story…” Also, a report from Wccftech seems to confirm the poor sales of the 4060 Ti from markets that normally do well for PC ga...

This video maker's new AI editing tool picks your best takes for you

Artificial intelligence may already be a staple in the best video editing software , but now Veed is launching what it calls an “industry-first editing tool” for its video maker platform.  Every second counts when making online video, especially on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where brands only have a few seconds to capture the audience. Presumably, Veed thinks our “umms” and “aahs” are wasting valuable time - with Magic Cut set to clean up content.  The AI tool streamlines one of the most time-consuming (read: soul-destroying) parts of video editing - removing all the filler words and pauses. At the touch of a button, users can chop out all hesitation, deviation, or repetition. It’s joined by several other video editing tools aimed at polishing up post-production. Critical content creation  With its video maker service, Veed is no stranger to simplifying content editing. Unlike even the best free video editing software and video editing software for begin...

7 signs Cooler Master has gone bonkers at Computex 2023, and that’s a good thing

Day one at Computex 2023 was certainly filled with amazing new products and wacky releases, but I feel like most of it pales in comparison to what Cooler Master has cooked up in its labs. The brand has been showcasing many of its new products at the event in its headquarters in Taipei, and to say that it’s really going for the extraordinary is an understatement. Not to be biased, but I spent some time exploring the consumer electronics and peripherals area of the conference floor to check out what else is in store, and apart from some funky PC builds (there’s a volcano one, a temple, a futuristic building block one), some first-of-their-kind gaming chairs , and some new stuff from Asus , which I will be reporting on later, I haven’t really seen a lot to be super excited about. At least compared to what Cooler Master has been showcasing in its headquarters since May 29. This is all part of Cooler Master’s new vision, which it aptly calls “tech lifestyle,” the idea being that tech sho...

WhatsApp beta on Android introduces screen-sharing - here's how to enable it

Like Apple’s FaceTime, Zoom , and Microsoft Teams before it, WhatsApp may soon allow its users to share their screen with others during a video call. This info comes from WABetaInfo who discovered the upcoming feature after digging through the files of the latest Android beta. According to a recent report , a new icon is set to appear at the bottom of a video call in the call control view. Tapping it will “share your screen” with the other person and “everything displayed… will be recorded”. Of course, you can end the transmission at any time by revoking permission. There are some requirements that must be met first before anyone can try out screen-sharing. WABetaInfo states the “feature may be unavailable on old versions of Android”, plus the recipient cannot have “an outdated version of WhatsApp.” It’s also possible screen-sharing will not work in large group calls. It’s hard to say for sure what exactly are the limitations for this update since it hasn’t even been officially rel...

Asus ROG Ally's firmware updates widen performance gap with Steam Deck

The Asus ROG Ally , the company’s PC gaming handheld, has some impressive specs including an AMD Ryzen Z1 CPU, an XG mobile GPU, and a gorgeous 1080p display. However, its actual performance hasn’t been indicative of what it’s theoretically capable of, until now. A new set of firmware and driver updates has increased gaming performance by up to 20%, a huge improvement over its launch results. According to YouTuber Dave2D, and reported on by PCGamesN , several of the best PC games saw an immediate increase in framerate after the updates were installed.  For instance, Red Dead Redemption 2 ran at 41 fps at 720p before, and after it reached an impressive 60 fps. Similarly, Forza Horizon 5 jumped from 45fps to 59fps. However, not every game saw a massive increase, like Cyberpunk 2077, which only went up by 2 fps. Asus, do better These are certainly very impressive results from a simple series of firmware and driver updates, better showcasing how powerful the ROG Ally’s specs a...

Cooler Master presents the ‘gaming chair reimagined’ at Computex 2023 - and all this other stuff too

Computex 2023 is in full swing, and Cooler Master has unveiled a whole bunch of new goodies for us to enjoy. Most intriguing among these is the new Motion 1 gaming chair, which promises to revolutionize the way we view our gaming thrones. Designed in collaboration with D-Box , the Motion 1 is a chair that uses haptic technology to swing you around while you game, a lot like the seats in those 4D cinemas you may have stumbled across. The chair has a base that controls the chair’s movement and vibrations, which also features a wraparound strip of RGB lighting. The chair feels like an answer to a question no one has ever asked: what if my chair could fling me around like a ragdoll while I play Assassin’s Creed? That’ll definitely improve my gaming performance! How am I supposed to get those sweet sweet Victory Royals in Fortnite if my chair is quaking? we don’t know how much the Motion 1 is going to cost, but given how expensive the average gaming chair without haptics costs, it’ll p...

Alan Wake 2 might get a physical release after all

Alan Wake 2 might not be consigned to a digital-only release after all, as publisher THQ Nordic expressed its interest in providing a physical version of the upcoming title. Releasing October 17, Alan Wake 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Remedy's 2010 cult hit. Sadly, fans were understandably left dismayed when the game's official FAQ page confirmed a digital-only release on PS5 and Xbox Series X |S and Epic Games Store. At least at the time of launch. It looks like THQ Nordic wants to make sure that isn't the case, however. Replying to Remedy's official Twitter account, the publisher stressed to "give it some thought," in regards to partnering with it for a physical release.  The rapport makes sense, as THQ published the physical PC version of Alan Wake over a decade ago. It's sensible, then, that THQ Nordic would want to rebuild that relationship and ensure physical game collectors are satisfied. @alanwake @remedygames I mean... we did the di...

Quordle today - hints and answers for Tuesday, May 30 (game #491)

Nvidia reveals a whole new kind of Ethernet for generative AI

Nvidia has announced details of a new networking platform designed specifically with generative AI workloads in mind, promising lightning-speed lossless networking. The company’s new Spectrum-X technology is built using the Spectrum-4 Ethernet switch and BlueField-3 DPU, and promises performance and power efficiency increases of as much as 1.7x. In a press release , the company said: “The delivery of end-to-end capabilities reduces run-times of massive transformer-based generative AI models,” which in turn enables companies to operate and make decisions more quickly, unlocking cost-saving potential. Spectrum-X Ethernet Nvidia’s Networking Senior VP, Gilad Shainer, said: “Spectrum-X is a new class of Ethernet networking that removes barriers for next-generation AI workloads that have the potential to transform entire industries.” Its key component, the Spectrum-4 Ethernet switch, is capable of 51 Tb/sec speeds. What this means for consumers is that, in conjunction with BlueField-3...

A gaming Chromebook with an Nvidia RTX graphics card? Sign me up

‘Chromebooks aren’t for gaming!’ So goes the eternal refrain of tech journalists like myself when asked (for the millionth time) what laptop a family member should buy for their games-obsessed kid.  But that could finally be about to change! Google has been pushing the notion of ‘gaming Chromebooks’ for a while now, and I’ve been thoroughly unconvinced . These Chrome-powered laptops, like the otherwise pretty solid Acer Chromebook 516 GE , don’t actually run games locally, instead relying on cloud-based game-streaming platforms such as GeForce Now and Xbox Game Pass . Don’t get me wrong, I like Google’s affordable laptop brand - I’m writing this very article on one of the best Chromebooks - but cloud gaming is still in its infancy, inaccessible for many due to subscription fees and high internet speed requirements. That’s why Google’s latest scheme intrigues me: a plan to bring Nvidia’s power RTX graphics cards to a pair of new Chromebooks. RTX on Let’s not get carried away...

5 things I can't wait to see at Computex 2023

The most important Computing conference is officially here, and I cannot wait to see what hundreds of tech companies have in store this year. Computex 2022 was more of a somber event, its biggest releases centering around components with AMD showcasing its Ryzen 7000 CPUs, the first PCIe 5.0 SSDs debuting, Nvidia revealing its Grace CPU Superchip and liquid-cooled GPUs , and Mediatek rolling out its Wi-Fi 7 chips . And while those were exciting launches, I kind of missed the quirky stuff that Computex has been known to flaunt – even if many of them never really make it to mass production. Now that the world is back in full swing after the pandemic lull, I want the event to bring back its pre-pandemic era like Taylor Swift is reliving her 1989 era. I want beer-tap custom cases, space-age gaming chairs, fun keyboards, PC cases that moonlight as a standing desk (or is it the other way around), and lots and lots of RGB. Bearing that in mind and knowing what some brands have under wr...
